Staying properly hydrated is an integral part of our daily activities, but the question of the day still remains... “Are you getting enough water?”
Chances are you probably are not consuming the recommended 6-8 glasses a day (but if you are, kudos!) and you are definitely not alone. Our bodies are comprised of up to 60% water which helps our internal system flush out toxins, maintains the integrity of cell and organ functions, regulates the body’s temperature through sweating as well as keeps our skin looking firm and youthful.
Many people go through their busy day without even realizing that their body is really water-deficient, and the long term effects can actually have a physical response on their skin. Lack of hydration is known to speed up the process of aging skin; causing wrinkles, fine lines and other natural signs of aging. How is this anatomically possible? Well, when your body is water-parched, your organs will desperately try to draw water from your blood, consequently, your blood will try to obtain water from your skin cells. This will ultimately cause your skin to appear less resilient and prone to wrinkling and discolouration. Drinking ample amounts of water daily is widely known to help reduce the process of aging as well as assist the skin in forming a stronger protective barrier against environmental pollutants such as UV rays.
Drinking water can be boring and tasteless, but it really doesn’t have to be! Here are some simple tips to help keep you more hydrated throughout the day:
- Try adding slices of cucumbers, melons or lemons to a jug of water and make it a habit to finish the jug of water each day.
- Are you a huge juice-drinker? Dilute it with some cold water. Orange, apple, pineapple and cranberry juice tends to be too sweet anyways!
- Eat more water-rich fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers (96.7% water), celery (95.4% water), watermelon (91.5% water) and iceberg lettuce (95.6% water).
- Track your water intake, if you hold yourself accountable to it by using apps or set reminders on your smart phone, you are more likely to satisfy your goal.
